TIPS FOR GREAT ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

April 22, 2020

Besides wanting to have awesome pictures of you and your future spouse, engagement photos are often used for save the dates or invitations. Making sure you have great pictures to send out to your guest list is something to keep in mind as you get ready for your session.

Here are a few tips to help you get some pictures you’ll love….even if they’re not with us 😉

~ Coordinate your outfits- It seems easy on the surface, but it can be challenging. I recommend finding a color that you both can wear. The color just needs to be in the same color family, not exactly the same shade. There are definitely certain colors that photograph better, but as long as you coordinate a little, it will look just fine!

~ Practice your makeup ahead of time- I recommend this to all of my clients in the style guide they receive. If you’re doing your own hair and makeup, practice ahead of time so you aren’t left feeling frustrated and rushed the day of. We’ve all been there, and it’s awful to leave not feeling confident with how you look.

~ Trust your photographer- I know this seems like a given, but its hard to “see things” the way we do. I can make a field on the side of the road look like an epic meadow but, when you pull up, it certainly won’t look that way in your eyes. This goes for poses too. I work really hard to make sure my clients look their best…and that might mean standing in a position that feels super weird. Trust me, I’m always watching things like arms, booties, and jaw lines.

~ Choose your location wisely- Just because a location is beautiful, means that it will look great in pictures. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but some places are really difficult to photograph. For example, water in the blazing sun ends up looking like a giant white spot in your photos. You lose the serene scenery in the sun. If there’s a location you love, be sure you talk to your photographer about it and see if you can work it out with timing the sun and events in the area.

My biggest advice for your engagement session is to make sure you have fun! This time is part of your wedding experience. Take the opportunity to laugh, be yourself, and let who you are as a couple shine through.
